He convinces Alex to dress up as him and go to the ball wearing a mask, pretending to have mistaken it for a masquerade event. Meanwhile, Cinderella sneaks away from the carriage, as her stepfamily is at the ball, and wanders into the gardens. There, she encounters Nicholas, a violinist who is in love with a noblewoman named Lora Pennington. Despite their deep affection for one another, Lora's parents forbid their union due to Nicholas being a commoner and their ambitions to wed their daughter to Prince Charles. This explains the somber tone of the violinist's music. Charles and Cinderella discuss this situation in the gardens and share the belief that social status and wealth should not determine one's choice of spouse. They both agree that genuine love can overcome any obstacle in the end.
